Rumors

I have been through many countryside villages. They blur together like blizzard flakes and become just the same as the last.

My stories bring smiles to faces and I am often asked if they are true. "I only embellish them a little," I say, "but who am I to tell you what to believe?"

The truth is, the only embellishment I do is to change my perspective from the Dread Pirate Roberts. Everything else is true.

Through my adventures, I have started hearing the same rumor. It seems to me that after I'm done telling my daring stories of swashbuckling swordplay and dangerous dueling, that townsfolk whisper a little louder and a little closer.

They talk about a town called Alcalá de Pirma. It is over run by bandits and robbers. The towns folk are terrorized by their leader, one called Iago del Valle. They say he's as strong as twenty men, as fast as storm clouds, and as ruthless as an Iberian lynx.

They glance at me after speaking. For a while, I thought they may have considered me to be this Iago del Valle. Now, I am not so sure.

I think they are looking for a hero. I am a perfect candidate. With my expert swordsmanship and extraordinary tales of meeting the Dread Pirate Roberts and surviving, why wouldn't I be?

But I know something they do not know. I was the Dread Pirate Roberts. If there's one thing I learned while being him, it's that he believes that he should be the only dreaded man in the world.

I would be doing an injustice by not fulfilling that belief.
